Potassium Chloride

Potassium chloride (KCl, or potassium salt) is a metal halide salt composed of potassium and chlorine. It is odorless and has a white or colorless vitreous crystal appearance. The solid dissolves readily in water, and its solutions have a salt-like taste. Potassium chloride can be obtained from ancient dried lake deposits.

KCl is used as a fertilizer, in medicine, in scientific applications, domestic water softeners (as a substitute for sodium chloride salt), and in food processing, where it may be known as E number additive E508. As a chemical feedstock, it is used for the manufacture of potassium hydroxide and potassium metal.

Aluminium chloride

Aluminium chloride, also known as aluminium trichloride, is an inorganic compound with the formula AlCl3. The anhydrous form is important commercially. It has a low melting and boiling point.

It is mainly produced and consumed in the production of aluminium metal. AlCl3 is a common Lewis-acid catalyst for Friedel-Crafts reactions, both acylations and alkylations. Aluminium chloride can also be used to introduce aldehyde groups onto aromatic rings, for example via the Gattermann-Koch reaction . Aluminium chloride is required as an ingredient in certain pharmaceuticals. It is also used to manufacture paint, synthetic rubber, lubricants, wood preservatives, and some organic chemicals. This is a versatile substance.
